Numerous reports highlight the problems of retaining females in this sector. I notice, however, that there are few, if any, recommendations or actions aimed at the individual. The lack of agency frustrated me – surely mid-level female architects could do more to help themselves get to the top? I decided to find out.
This report is the culminaton of interviews with mid-level female architects. Over ten questions, the interviews included:
Approaches to self-development and the factors supporting it.
Responsibility for self-development opportunities/efforts.
Which competencies are important.
Differences in experiences between females and males.
Women’s future possibilities.
I hope you find this report insightful and that you use it to generate conversations with your colleagues and managers about the topics raised. With still not enough senior female role models at the top level of architecture firms, the future of gender equity remains at stake without further action at all levels.
